Sue Trickey

Gloucestershire artist Sue TrickeyI am a new Gloucestershire artist, delighted to be finding the time again for art after a busy family life.  I have lived in Cheltenham since 1991.   I have always loved being creative even as a young child.   As well as creating artwork, I am also a songwriter ( I have produced four CD’s of original songs and music) and have a large folder of poetry written over the years.  I am so, so grateful for these creative gifts I have been given and am glad to be sharing my art with you here.  I am so happy and fulfilled to be creating original art.  It is a wonderful gift and one in which i shall be forever learning!!

Two years ago I was inspired to try my hand at art again and to “pick up my paintbrush" the first time after a break 20 years!  I started with my “Autumn” tree, I was then inspired to created trees for all the seasons, trying to make these imaginative and unique.  I created these using ink pens and watercolours and fine inks.  Gradually, my work started to evolve into mixed media.  For my “Shakespeare tree” I started to combine collage using vintage books/text and other bits and pieces collected over a period of time.  This idea is continuing to develop.

My work continues to evolve and for my latest “Water of Life” It has developed into a 3D mixed media work.  I feel I am following visions that are in my mind.  I have a strong sense of how I should start a new artwork but I never quite know quite how the finished piece will look.  It is exciting to be doing this and to watch the art gradually take shape over a period of time.  Some pieces are so detailed it can take me six months to finish.  I am never in a hurry!!

My Shakespeare Tree was a finalist in Gloucester's 'That White Room Gallery'  Open Art Competition 2015, and as a result I have had exhibitions in Gloucester museum and at Taurus crafts, Lydney, where I now have my original art cards for sale in their gift shop.

I was a commended artist at the recent art exhibition on the theme of “Treasure” at the Hub Gallery, Christchurch.

My recent “Tree of Life” combines collage (Vintage bibles, books, music, origami, wrapping paper etc) with watercolour and fine ink pen.  It has been shortlisted for NOA (National Open Art 2016) so I am just getting the work ready to be sent to Chichester for the next round.  This was my first and only entry so I was so pleased.  If you wish to vote online for my work there is a world vote  (voting ends end August 2016).

This artwork is proving popular and was also selected for an outdoor light box exhibition by Daily Life Ltd in Stratford, London where it was exhibited with other artists work for 2 months back in Feb/March 2016.

"Water of Life"

Mixed Media; collage, watercolour, Black fine ink pen, beads, wire and broken jewellery. 2015

53 cm x 43 cm, including frame

- NFS -

Framed giclee print available for sale for £50

A1 poster ( packaged in cardboard roll ) £15 ( plus £3 p&p)

Smaller rolled poster £10 ( plus £3 p&p)

This was a commissioned artwork on the theme of water. I was inspired to create an abstract picture and had the image of a water lily in my mind, surrounded by leaves with ripples of water flowing out, Into this I added lots of text cut out from vintage bibles and songbooks on the theme of Water.  As the piece evolved I decided to create a 3D effect with the flower appearing to come out of the page, and also to add some 3D metallic fishes. This is a work that needs to be viewed closely and on exhibition I would add a magnifying glass and clear kaleidoscopes to view.

"Shakespeare Tree"

Mixed Media:  collage, watercolour, fine ink pens, 2014

- NFS -

Prints cream mounted and cellophane wrapped £20 (plus p&p)

This is another of my series of tree pictures, This is my first attempt at using collage in art, combining this with the ink pens and watercolour. It was inspired by some vintage Shakespeare books I came across while clearing out my mother-in-laws house.  Also, earlier this year was the first time that I had visited Shakespeare's birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon I felt inspired to create a tree and to add the names of all of Shakespeare's plays into the branches.  I also used other vintage books, book bindings and other "bits and pieces".

The original artwork was a winner in Gloucester's 'That White Room Gallery' Open Gloucestershire art competition 2015, and has been on exhibition at Gloucester museum and art gallery and also at Taurus crafts, Lydney.

I can also get posters of this artwork made on request.

"Tree of Life"

Mixed Media:  Old Bibles, watercolor, fine ink pens, children's artwork, wrapping paper, origami, vintage books, book bindings, 2015

- NFS -

A1 posters (in cardboard rolls) £15 ( plus p&p)

Smaller posters £10 ( plus p&p)

Prints cream mounted and cellophane wrapped £20 (plus p&p)

Following on from my Shakespeare tree I was inspired to create a tree by adding text from vintage/shabby Bibles . I wanted the theme to be "The Tree of Life" from the Bible and added as many verses as I could find referring to this.  I caught to find 12 different fruits, finding as many fruits as I could find mentioned in the bible.  I wanted the artwork to be something you could go back to many times and always see/read something different.  In my mind I saw a tree with the branches facing outwards like wings with birds flying in to the tree and some nesting in the branches. As the piece evolved I have hidden all sorts of things into the tree that you will only find on close inspection!!

My Tree of life is dedicated to the memory of my first born son James who died ( 23/12/14), in a tragic road traffic accident while cycling . He was just 22 yrs. I was halfway through this piece at the time and the tree evolved as I worked through my grief.  This work took me six months to complete.  The original artwork is not for sale, though it is available for exhibitions, On viewing the original I add a magnifying glass which is needed to view full detail and to read the text.
