Chris Gregg

Landscape and historical specialist in oils and acrylics

Please note that no new work has been added to my pages on this website since 2018, though it remains the best place to see a record of my artworks up to that year, and grateful thanks to Andy Lloyd for caretaking it so well over the years.  My more recent work can be found on my new Art Website chrisgregg-art.co.uk/.  Please take a look there too.

I seem to have been painting or drawing all my life!  One of my first memories is holding a pencil or paintbrush. I enthusiastically copied TV characters, or people from comics and magazines, and that was my introduction to figure painting before I eventually learned how to do it properly at life drawing classes. My small boy’s interest in Westerns later turned into a lasting interest in military history which then found further expression in rendering the colourful uniforms and events of the past as paintings.

Since those very early days I’ve also developed a real love for landscape, trees and water which I can exercise in great variety by painting scenes throughout Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds as well as farther afield.  I’ve been lucky enough to paint scenes in Australia, the USA, France and some Mediterranean locations. My work covers the spectrum of landscape and figures, especially those of a military or historical nature, and on occasion also includes birds and animals.

The richness and permanence of oil colours gives great satisfaction and I use environmentally sensitive water mixable oil colours which give as good a result as old fashioned oils.  I find that, depending on the ground used, similar effects to oil can be obtained in acrylics with only hours spent as drying time instead of the days or even weeks for a highly developed oil work. It’s a matter of personal taste for the buyer, of course, which looks best. I also occasionally turn my hand to using fine liner pens, ink or water colour pencils for military figures.

I have a studio in my house in one of the beautiful valleys near Stroud.  The surrounding countryside provides much stimulation but I'm also managing to pursue the more illustrative and story-telling type of work as well as the occasional portrait, when asked. The "Hussarette" project, featuring females in (or out of) 18th century or Napoleonic military uniforms, has taken off well during 2017 and I am now (June 2018) up to Number 20 in this series. Finding a new model with an exotic continental look, Marianne, and new patrons has given welcome impetus to the Hussarette theme but I'm always on the lookout for suitable models; please get in touch if you are interested in this or any other modelling styles (see also next paragraph). You can see them on my Military page.

In 2017 I was also commissioned with two series of drawings for books on certain 18th century campaigns and I hope to see them published in some form this year. I will post a link when available, or feature them on my blog.  This web page shows the more recent landscape work but also paintings on the theme of ladies, including musicians, and I have plans for a series of elegantly dressed, enigmatic narrative or decorative works. I need models for that too so please volunteer if you fancy dressing up for a photo session leading to a painting, and/or these could be worked up into personal portraits.

I post to my blog every few weeks, and though it is mainly about my military models and wargaming, my military art work generally gets its first public showing there. notjustoldschool.blogspot.co.uk/. Search the right side bar or the  "labels" right at the bottom of it.

A selection of my landscape work can be seen on rotation in a permanent exhibition at The Butchers Arms, Oakridge Lynch, near Stroud, Gloucestershire.

I'm always interested in taking on commissions for landscapes, figures or historical subjects; please email me to discuss your requirements. Contact details at the bottom of this page.

I now post images of most of my new work to Instagram so please follow me at  instagram.com/chrisgregg173/

Some customer comments:

"It’s easy to be enthusiastic when you produce such wonderful images. The price sounds good to me."

"WOW!– another great job Chris, thank you. The girls look fantastic and I love all the detailing – the lace has come out well as you say, well worth the extra effort and the colours do work very well ...... The background looks great, so no changes needed."

"Absolutely fabulous, I have to hand it to you Chris, that is an amazing piece of work, I love it.....Fantastic work Chris, I’m really pleased with how it looks which is very much what I had in mind."

"What can I say but you have definitely done it again, I love the two new paintings, great detail and sense of action in them like the better sort of “boys own adventure” illustrations. I spent quite a while on Friday just looking at them and then on Saturday hung them up in the dining room and had a “proper” look at them in natural light – superb, I really am pleased with them. I’ll be getting them framed early in the New Year. Thanks for all your work on these, it definitely paid off."

'This was my first commission with Chris and it certainly won't be my last. The painting conveys the imagery and the atmosphere I was hoping for. It is an excellent piece of work' (Jacobite Charge)

'Thank you so much for Totila outside Rome 546AD. It's a super picture, you really do get to grips with a military scene and give it a sense of life and realism. One can easily imagine the Gothic king taking the air with his guards outside the walls. Great touch with the dogs!'

(Regarding a Hussarette):

"Wow, if I could paint like that my mind would run rampant."

(Of pen and ink drawings):

"HOLY COW! The artwork is fantastic beyond words. I knew that I would like it, but you have exceeded my expectations greatly. I am very pleased with your work and I think that we can do a lot of things with this. I will definitely want to commission more artwork. You have a very good eye for depicting military actions"

"These are great. I really like the finished articles and especially the ambush. Both set the scene and illustrate the text perfectly"

(Acrylic landscape painting):

"Quite honestly I'm blown away! The painting looks fantastic, even better than I could have anticipated"

And a thought from a famous artist:

“What is quickly done is quickly seen, and would not bear the test of careful examination”
